Grand Final - A night to remember!
The Pub Stars National Karaoke Competition 2008 came to a spectacular finale last week at Camelot Theme Park in Preston.
Meet the Winner! Natalie Whalin, pictured above and with reigning champion, Stephen Barr (top right).
After 8 months of tough competitions across the county, the fourteen Grand Finalists came together to compete for the crown of Pub Stars Champion 2008.
The atmosphere was electric with the crowd raising the roof after each performance.
Although nerves were present they did nothing but drive the adrenaline as all the finalists rose to the occasion and gave their best performance ever.
After careful deliberation the 4 judges announced their top stars of the evening in reverse order, in third place from The Malt Shovel in Hungerford was Alistair Ward. Second place was awarded to Claire Yaxley from The Regal in Norwich and finally the Pub Stars Champion for 2008 is Natalie Whalin representing the Bullion Wine Bar in St Helens, Merseyside. Natalie wowed the judges with her rendition of ‘Pink’s Who Knew’. The contestants were joined on stage to receive their prize cheques by the judges, including, Richard Horne, Managing Director of Mediatheme Limited, Pascal Magdinier, Music Director of Easy Karaoke, Andrew Campbell of Pub Stars and reigning champion of Pub Stars, 2007 winner Stephen Barr.
Huge congratulations to Natalie who was presented with a cheque for £3000 and a chance to record her own gold disc courtesy of Easy Karaoke. All contestants deserve our applause as all performances were of such high quality – everyone singing at this stage of the competition is already a star!

7th Regional Final - The Hare and Hounds.
The last Regional for Pub Stars 2008 was completed on Saturday night. Judges, singers and supporters gathered at The Hare and Hounds in Leyton, London to compete in the second southern regional of this year, for a chance to go through to the next stage of the competition.
The talent at this regional was extraordinary high so the judges had their work cut out trying to choose 2 singers out of the contestants to go through to the Grand Final. Like other Regionals, the singers sang 2 songs each, performing to both fast and song songs.

All singers were marked on 4 equally weighing categories, singing ability, performance, presentation and star quality. Each judge marks each contestant individually out of 40 – after looking at the scores, it was clear that we were in complete unison and agreed that the two people to go through, who were awarded joint first place were: Robert Preston representing The Black Horse in Ilford and Vanessa Martins singing for The Hare and Hounds in Leyton. Rob wowed the judges with his rendition of ‘Breath Easy’ by Blue and Vanessa impressed the judges with her version of ‘One Moment in Time’ by Whitney Houston.
In close 2nd place came Stanley Beeky representing The Hornsey Tavern and then third place was awarded to Lynsey Humphreys from The Prince of Wales in Kilburn.

All singers competing in this regional (along with all other events) have already done fantastically well to get to this stage. The standard of singers has been excellent so everyone is leaving as a winner.

A duet from the Grand Finalists.
A huge thanks to everyone at The Hare and Hounds for all their help and effort put into Saturday night.

6th Regional Final - The Bedes Lea.

The Judges had an extremely hard decision with singers imitating artists like Mika, Bon Jovi, Whitney Houston and Eva Cassidy – the standard was very high indeed. Three independent judges had the very hard task of marking each performance with a rating out of 40. All singers were reminded that the competition and judging is based on 4 categories - singing ability, performance, presentation and star quality. Unfortunately of course only 2 singers can go through to the next stage. Awarded joint 1st place were Dean Michael Barnes representing The Red Lion in Totton and Alistair Ward representing The Malt Shovel in Lambourn, both singers will be going through to compete in the Grand Final in September. With only a couple of points in it, close 2nd place was awarded to Ashton Pierce from the Blue Lagoon in Hove. Ashton wowed the judges with her rendition of ‘I will always love you’ by Whitney Houston (P7050253), finally congratulations to Amber Spencer who was awarded the certificate for 3rd place. (P7050235)

It wasn’t just the singers who got involved in the action on Saturday night. Our very own judge for the evening, Naomi Morgan wowed the audience with a song or two, along with several audience members who participated in several games promoted on the night.

A huge thank you to James and John for ensuring the evening went without any hitches. Good Job guys.

5th Regional Final - Bluewater Club.
The 5th Regional of our Pub Stars 2008 tour, took us to Bridgend and The Bluewater Club. Contestants gathered together on the night, as nerves were present, each act performed in their own individual way, wowing the judges with both singing ability and performance.
Bluewater Regional Winners.
The 4 judges came to a difficult decision at the end of the night and awarded places in the Grand Final to Craig Andrew representing The Great Escape in Bridgewater and Lisa Riley from Sherry’s Tavern in Barnstaple. Craig won over the judges with his performance and vocal ability of ‘Ain’t that a kick in the head’ by Robbie Williams. Lisa received top marks for her rendition of ‘There you’ll be’ by Faith Hill.

The Bluewater Club provided special effects with glitter and streamer cannons. These were let off when the winners were called, making them feel extra special. Entertaining us for the evening was Lian Williams, who not only compered the evening but impressed us with a couple of songs – helping her out was Chris, one of our artist judges.

Compere and entertainer - Lian Williams.
We look forward to seeing Craig and Lisa in the Grand Final.

4th Regional Final -
The George and Dragon.
Another week, another set of singers to add to the Grand Final of the Pub Stars 2008 competition. This week, we saw contestants sing their heart out at The George and Dragon in Tyldesley. The Standard of singers at this regional was exceptional – making the judge’s job extremely hard.

At all levels of the Pub Stars competition, the singers are judged on 4 equal weighing categories; singing ability, performance, presentation and star quality. We are looking for the whole package and believe we found it at Sunday’s event. With only 5 points separating the top 4 singers after the first round, it was very hard to see who would emerge as the winner.
All contestants’ sang 2 songs and things got even closer after the 2nd round – unfortunately however there can only be 2 singers going through to the next stage. After the competition, the judges marked up their scores where the winning order started to emerge. In close 3rd place came Gareth Round representing The Castle in Staffordshire. Gareth wowed the audience and judges with his excellent Elvis impersonations. 2nd place was awarded to Daniella Caballero singing on behalf of the Strawberry Gardens in Stockport.

Going through to the Grand Final winning joint place at this years North West regional heat are Natalie Whalin representing The Bullion Wine Bar in St Helens. Natalie’s performance of ‘Who Knew’ by Pink wowed the judges along with her rendition of Eva Cassidy’s ‘Over the Rainbow'. Competing alongside Natalie at the Grand Final will be Lisa Cox from The Green Dragon in Rotherham. Lisa’s impersonation of Amy Winehouse’s Valerie, along with ‘What’s up’ by 4 Non Blondes landed her a place in Preston’s Grand Final. All winning singers received a well deserving certificate.
A huge thank you to all staff at The George and Dragon for an excellent night.

The winners receive their certificates.

We saw a fun packed night with lots of games from the Entertainer Pro, including Fun Racing, High Lo Cards and Take your Pick. The games developed a little further into the night with musical chairs, baby feeding, balloon bursting and even pole dancing. Crowds gathered and watched while prizes were awarded for those brave enough to have a go.
The Bucks Head Crowd.
Amongst all the fun and games, 2 chosen winners were awarded with a place in the Grand Final of the competition, and they were, Lisa McPhee representing Harrows Inn in Galashiels and Cheryl Chambers from The Bucks Head. Congratulations to both singers and we look forward to seeing them at the Final in September.

The Judges had yet another hard decision with singers imitating artists like Adele, Eva Cassidy and Queen. Due to a tie break situation, the singers going through to the Grand Final from the Midlands regional include Tara Jade Anderson representing The Grampian Club in Corby (P6150195), Carly Smith from The George in Blayby (P6150210) and Dominic Dutton from Chambers in Nottingham (P6150209). 1st Regional Final - The Regal.
Our Regional Finals kicked off on Saturday in East Anglia. Singers competed for a place in the Grand Final at The Regal in Norwich. Each singer sang 2 songs – and what a fantastic performance. Malcolm the DJ kept the crowds and atmosphere electric, even singing a song or two himself.
The judges had a very hard job on their hands as the standard of singers was very high indeed – and it’s only the first regional!
With only 1 point between them, the 2 singers going through to the Grand Final in September are; Claire Yaxley, stealing the show with her rendition of Bjork’s ‘it’s oh so quiet’. Joining Claire on the stage will be Neil Wiltshire representing the Jolly Farmers in Norwich. Neil wowed the judges with his playful guitar while singing Bon Jovi’s ‘Bed of Roses.
